Multi-Lens CCTV Cameras: Combined MP vs Resolution per View
A multi-lens camera advertised as “12MP combined” is not necessarily recording a 12MP image from each lens. Check the resolution of each view, whether the output is separate or stitched, and the detail available in the area you actually need to monitor. Compare those requirements before sending a dealer quotation request.
This guide explains how to read multi-lens specifications. It does not report a LiveView camera test or independently verify the advertised sensor and recording specifications.
Combined megapixels and resolution per view
Megapixels describe a pixel count. Adding the advertised counts of several views gives a combined figure; it does not make each individual view inherit that total. Also ask for the recorded width × height and frame rate for each stream, rather than relying only on a rounded MP label.
| Advertised description | How to read it | What still needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| Two 4MP views, 8MP combined | The stated total is 4MP + 4MP across two views. | Recorded dimensions and frame rate of each view; simultaneous recording. |
| Three 4MP views, 12MP combined | The stated total is 4MP + 4MP + 4MP across three views. | Whether all three views are retained and can be played back or exported. |
| One stitched panoramic output | Multiple sensor images may be aligned into a single wider image. | The final output dimensions, field of view and appearance of the joined area. |
These are ways to interpret a specification, not equivalent image-quality ratings. Reolink’s dual-lens explanation illustrates both combined pixel counts and different output designs in its own range. Its features do not establish the capabilities of a LiveView model.
Separate views, a panorama and a moving view serve different needs
A split-screen app layout and a stitched panoramic image are different outputs. Do not infer seamless coverage from the number of lenses or the number of tiles shown on a phone. Ask which views are fixed, manually adjustable or motorised, and what remains visible when a movable head turns.
For a shop entrance and counter, describe each required scene separately. For a wider yard, mark the important boundaries and any area needing close detail. A camera’s position must suit every intended view; several lenses at one mounting point do not automatically replace cameras located at different positions.
Axis’s panoramic-camera white paper distinguishes stitched multisensor images from separate multidirectional views. It also explains that useful scene detail depends on resolution, lens and subject distance. A larger headline MP total alone therefore does not establish that a face or other required detail will be usable at your installation position.
Apply the checks to the LiveView listings
The LiveView Dual Lens 8MP Wi-Fi Camera listing describes two 4MP views, marketed as 8MP combined, with fixed-wide and PTZ views. The LiveView 3 Lens 12MP Wi-Fi Camera listing describes three 4MP views, marketed as 12MP combined. These are advertised catalog descriptions, not independently measured output specifications.
Use the Wi-Fi camera range to select product links, then request model-specific confirmation of the following:
- Per-view output: recorded dimensions, frame rate and whether the quoted resolution is native or processed.
- Coverage: which direction each view covers at the proposed mounting point, and which heads can move.
- Simultaneous recording: which views record together in the intended mode, including what happens during tracking.
- Playback and export: whether each required view can be retrieved and exported, rather than merely seen in live view.
- Installation checks: a demonstration at representative distances, lighting and movement, using recorded footage as well as the live screen.
For recording retention, use our CCTV memory-card storage guide. Account for the streams actually recorded; a combined MP label is not a storage calculation.
Questions dealers often ask
Is a three-lens camera automatically better than a dual-lens camera?
No. Choose the arrangement that covers the required scenes with useful recorded detail. Compare per-view specifications, mounting constraints and playback behaviour, not lens count alone.
Does “three screens” prove there are three independently recorded streams?
No. A viewing layout alone does not establish the recording arrangement. Ask for a model-specific demonstration of simultaneous recording, playback and export for every required view.
Preparing a bulk enquiry? Send LiveView the selected camera links, model-wise quantities, a simple scene sketch and the required recorded detail. The dealer enquiry checklist helps organise the remaining equipment requirements.
